Xiqiao Mountain Scenic Area is located in the southwest of Nanhai District in Foshan, Guangzhou Province. The development project of Xiqiao Mountain started from 1951. The scenic area has 72 peaks, 28 waterfalls, 232 spring eyes and 42 caves with countless strange cliffs and rocks. Xiqiao Mountain Scenic Spot is rated as the National Key Scenic Spot as a National Forest Park or Geopark.
History of Xiqiao Mountain
The history of Xiqiao Mountain can be traced back to the middle of the Neolithic Age. At that time, the human had already created the fine stone tools and axes. These fine and practical tools profoundly affected the original civilization of the Pearl River area in Guangdong, and are known as the "Beacon of Pearl River civilization".
During the Ming and Qing dynasties, a large number of celeberities, including Zhan Ruoshui and He Baiyun successively lived in Xiqiao Mountain. They explored the Neo-Confucianism, wrote poems and draw paintings, freely and leisurely.
Main attractions at Xiqiao Mountain Scenic Area
Xiqiao Mountain Scenic Area has the quiet and beautiful natural scenery, as well as the long history and culture, making it a popular tourist destination in Foshan. The thousand-year history has condensed rich stone culture, Neo-Confucian culture, religious culture and martial arts culture in Xiqiao Mountain. It is also known as the hometown of the famous Kung Fu Master Wong Fei-hung.
Wong Fei-hung Martial Art Museum locates under the Xiqiao Mountain, where is the birthplace of Wong Fei-hung. Wong Fei-hung was born in 1856 during the end Qing Dynasty. He was professional in Kung Fu and Chinese medicine. His legends have been adapted into a series of Kung Fu films which are quite popular and famous both in home and abroad. The martial arts museum was built in 1996, which is a typical Lingnan-style ancient building. The museum is divided into the exercise lounge, Huang Feihong Historical Exhibition Hall, Baozhilin Medicine Hall and Baicao Hall.
Baofeng Temple is one of the four famous temples in the southern Guangdong Province with a history of more than 600 years. Baofeng Temple was built in 1404 of Ming Dynasty and was rebuilt in 1479. After going through the changes, the temple was almost destroyed. Today’s Baofeng Temple is redesigned in a style of Ming Dynasty, simple but elegant.
Baiyun Cave locates in the northwest part of the scenic area. There are many poets and calligraphers who have left rich poems and articles in Baiyun Cave.
Shiyan Stone Scenic Area locates in the southeast of Xiqiao Mountain. Shiyan Stone is a masterpiece left by the ancient stone quarrymen, making it the essence of the scenic spot. The hole of the stone is flat and round like a lip. The inner part of the hole is so wide to accommodate thousands of people at the same time.
