Travel to Shigatse, you first need to get to Lhasa by air, railway or bus and then transfer to Shigatse by bus or rental car. Buses regularly depart from Lhasa Coach Station to Shigatse. Shigatse is about 300 km away from Lhasa, and the ride takes around 7 hours. While in Lhasa North Suburb Passenger Station one can arrange a direct trip to Zhangmu Town or Sakya County in Shigatse.
Bus
The second largest city in Tibet, Shigatse acts as the transportation hub for central Tibet and the gateway to the vast western region. Buses link Shigatse to several locations around Tibet.
Buses leave Beijiao Bus Station in Lhasa, at 8:55 a.m. and Shigatse at 3:30 p.m. (6-7 hours; 51 RMB). The Xijiao Bus Station sends buses every 40 minutes from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day.
Shigatse Bus Station operates routes to Chengdu in Sichuan Province as well as other places in Tibet. Shigatse-Lhasa route run daily from 8:30 to 16:00, and Shigatse-Chengdu route depart every other day.
Taxi
In Shigatse, taxi drivers hang around at bus station usually don't run on meters, so visitors need to arrange a price with the driver before accepting the ride. Good bargaining skills are important, and the reasonable price for taking taxi to Lhasa is 70 RMB. It might be worthy to take taxi, although taking taxi is 20 Yuan more expensive than taking bus.
