Shanghai is set to elevate its global appeal with the construction of “Shanghai Gate,” the world’s tallest spokeless Ferris wheel, scheduled to break ground in Baoshan District by the end of 2026. Standing at 228 meters, this rotating capsule-style attraction will significantly surpass the current record holder in Shandong Province. As a core project of the Shanghai Gate initiative, this new landmark is designed to accelerate the city’s development into a world-renowned tourist destination, offering international participants of inbound tourism a breathtaking new vantage point along the Baoshan waterfront.
The project was unveiled at the 5th Shanghai Tourism Investment Promotion Conference as part of a 4-billion-yuan ($550 million) investment package. This large-scale initiative includes several high-tech cultural projects across East China, such as the Xuhui West Bund touring route featuring new energy sightseeing vehicles, and the Shanghai West Bank Star Dome, a 3,000-seat venue dedicated to immersive digital art. Additionally, an AI-powered interactive theater based on the popular series Blossoms will offer fans of Chinese pop culture a state-of-the-art engagement experience, further diversifying the city’s inbound tourism offerings.
Beyond urban landmarks, the Shanghai administration is strategically integrating rural tourism and smart technology into its broader growth strategy. The first phase of the riverfront touring route is expected to open in 2027, connecting 11.4 kilometers of the Huangpu River landscape. For global travelers, these developments signify Shanghai’s commitment to creating a seamless blend of traditional culture, modern engineering, and digital innovation. By leveraging its mega-market advantages, Shanghai continues to enhance its service quality, ensuring that inbound tourism remains a vital pillar of the city’s international identity.
