Foreign travelers are discovering a deeper side of Sanya inbound tourism as the tropical coastal city in Hainan Province shifts from short sightseeing trips toward longer stays and local experiences. Instead of only visiting beaches and resorts, more international visitors are exploring neighborhoods, shopping areas, wellness services and everyday life in Sanya.
The city recorded more than 650,000 entries and exits by foreign travelers from January to August 2026, up 27.2 percent year on year. With expanding international air connections, visa-free policies and improved visitor services, Sanya is attracting more travelers who want to experience Hainan at a slower pace.
Many foreign visitors now stay in Sanya for weeks or even a month, shopping at local supermarkets, trying traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) wellness experiences, and exploring commercial areas like local residents. International payment services, multilingual assistance and customized travel options are also making the city more convenient for overseas travelers.
As Sanya inbound tourism continues to develop, the city is becoming more than a beach destination. It is emerging as a gateway for international visitors to experience local life and explore the culture, nature and attractions of Hainan.
