Hainan, south China’s island province, is set to apply its tax refund program to domestic tourists from May 1, 2011.

The provincial government has said it will release details of the tax rebate policy in late April. Tourists are expected to be able to buy goods worth of CNY5,000 under the tax refund scheme.

On January 1, 2011 the island inaugurated its tax-rebate policy. The policy allows foreign travelers, and visitors from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau to apply for a tax rebate of 11% on their total purchases when departing from Hainan.
