Great Hall of the People Highlights
The whole complex of the hall covers a total area of 66,000 square meters. The building was designed by Zhang Jiade, a famous contemporary architect, in a typical Chinese style. A circular domed auditorium with a 55-meters high dome is its main structure, covering 18,500 square meters. At first glance the round roof topped with a green glazed tile dome makes it look like the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.
The Great Hall of the People originally had the main hall, the north wing, and the south wing. In 1986, the east wing was added. It was originally called the Sino-Soviet Building, but in 1955, its name was changed to the present name - Great Hall of the People.
In front of the People's Great Hall is a big square named People's Square. In May 1997, People’s Square was completed, covering an area of 25,000 square meters. In the morning, you can see local people practicing Taiji or martial arts there. At night the entire structure is lighted up, making it a good photo opportunity. In evening, you can also see thousands of people dancing on the square, which gives you a glimpse of locals’ life.
